Bark and Compost

What is Mulch ?

Mulch is a layer of organic material placed on the surface of
the soil in a garden to assist plant growth.

Why should I mulch?

Providing a garden with a healthy bed of mulch has enormous
benefits for both the garden and the gardener.

It benefits the garden by:

  • Retaining moisture in the soil for a longer period of time and preventing
    ‘crusting’ of the soil surface
  • Regulating soil temperature and protecting the root system from the
    extremes of summer and winter
  • Increasing the water penetration ability of the soil
  • Controlling soil erosion by reducing water run-off
  • Providing a rich environment for worm and microbe activity which in turn aids
the fertility of the soil and supplies nutrients to the soil for plants to use

Of course there are many benefits for the gardener too,
by providing:

  • A neater, attractive garden that looks great and is well watered and healthy and
  • Reduced time weeding and watering!

In addition, the gardener is behaving in an environmentally responsible
manner by using a waste recyclable product, reducing water usage and
controlling erosion.
